Activity of the Volcano:
Observed Merapi from a distance of 5km to the South of the volcano, for around 3 hours on the 15th February, 3 hours on the 15th July. Steady gas emissions were observed from the crater area. Indonesian Authorities reported the plume to reach 150m above the summit this morning. Merapi had erupted 2 days prior to my visit, on the 13th February 05:16 local time. No eruptive activity or ash-emissions were observed during my observation on the 15th February.
A 3km restriction zone is currently in place for Merapi volcano, according to Indonesian Authorities BPPTKG, The Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation, Geological Agency.
