Activity of the Volcano:
Observed Merapi from a distance of 25 to 9 km to the South of the volcano, for several hours on the 19-20th February. Weather conditions: Scattered and low laying clouds, which often made observation difficult. Rockfall events were observed on both days and activity was similar to my visit in January. According to authorities (BPPTKG) rockfall events on both days descended to around 1000m below the summit.
A 5 km restriction zone is currently in place for Merapi volcano, according to Indonesian Authorities BPPTKG, The Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation, Geological Agency. The volcano is as of today 22th February 2021 still on alert level III.
